Aqualon™ and blanose™ CMC are anionic, water-soluble polymers. CMC is made by reacting alkali cellulose with sodium monochloroacetate under rigidly controlled conditions. The resultant polymer is purified and dried.  Purified cmc for personal care and cosmetic applications is typically sold at 99.5 percent minimum purity. 

Physical and solution properties of cmc can be varied through manipulation of degree of substitution (DS) and molecular weight. CMC is typically offered in three different DS ranges and a broad range of molecular weights. A variety of CMC grades are available to meet your formulation needs. Ashland provides cmc under the tradenames aqualon™ cmc and blanose™ cmc depending on site of manufacture.

CMC being a strong film former is an excellent binder (glue) for tobacco applications. Typical are products at the lower end of the viscosity specification to avoid too strong viscosity built in the tobacco slurry.
