Allantoin is a white, odorless crystalline powder. Allantoin has been classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Advisory Review Panel on Over-The-Counter Topical Analgesics as a Category I (safe
and effective) active ingredient skin protectant at use-levels of 0.5 to 2.0 percent. It can be formulated into various oral products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses and denture adhesives.
