Our solutions are more than skin deep.  Through transdermal and topical  applications, skin can be an effective way to deliver some medications.   Regardless of whether the drug is being delivered via gel, lotion, cream, ointment or foam, features including texture, adhesion,  and spreadability, as well as feel and smell, are important attributes to  consider for optimal patient compliance. For topical and transdermal application, Ashland's pharmacuetical team works with the talented skin care team to find alluring and luxurious ways to effectively and efficiently formulate topical and transdermal applications.

Topical treatments are administered to skin or mucous membranes to alleviate a variety of conditions. These treatments broadly encompass creams, foams, gels, lotions and ointments. There are a number of sought-after attributes for conferring desired properties to a topical formulation: rheology control, spreadability, adhesion and diffusion control. Ashland offers high-quality cellulose ethers such as Natrosol™ 250 hydroxyethylcellulose, Klucel™ hydroxypropylcellulose and Aqualon™ sodium carboxymethylcellulose to deliver these properties. Some of the topical film formers offered in our skin-care product lines are also suitable for use in topical applications. Plasdone™ povidone is also a good film former for topical applications. Klucel™ hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) is a nonionic water-soluble cellulose ether with a remarkable combination of properties.
