Paper and Coatings
Turning the page for progress
Even with the growth of digital communications, the demand for paper and paper products remains strong and Ashland continues to explore new and better ways to make it. We continue to refine the paper making process to increase both the wet and dry strength so there's less waste during production and it lasts longer. In addition to working on the product, we also apply problem solving to create a cleaner process. Write a new chapter on success with Ashland.
Ashland specialty chemical include several products that are used in the many different areas of paper and coated paper production. Some Ashland products such as Aqualon™ carboxymethylcellulose can help increase both the wet and dry strength of the paper product. Its flexibility allows it to be added at the pulper or in the stock. Natrosol™ hydroxyethylcellulose joins Aqualon to control curl in specialty papers. The ability of these and other Ashland products offer better retention and improved drainage to yield better web formation. And since the fibers are held in the paper, the water system stays cleaner and biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids are lower.
Ashland also provides solutions to the coated paper industry including products for bleached board, ink jet and transparencies. Other Ashland products offer unique coating properties such as improved smoothness, brightness, opacity and gloss. Contact Ashland to see how we can help you turn the page on your paper problems.

Admiral fluidized polymer
Admiral products are fluidized polymer suspensions of cellulosic ethers that deliver superior performance with the added advantage of easier handling. When added to a paper coating, Admiral FPS readily thickens to provide the desired rheology control. In addition, Admiral FPS is compatible with virtually all binders, pigments and coating additives and is commercially used in free sheet, bleached board, recycled boxboard and lightweight coate...
Liberty™ water-soluble polymer suspension
Liberty water-soluble polymer suspension (FPS) is a thickener/rheology modifier that is most useful in paper coatings. This product has outstanding water-retention, coating holdout, coating runnability and handling properties. As a result, Liberty FPS has been found to offer superior performance advantages compared to traditional thickeners. It provides water retention, improved runnability, enhanced gloss, smoothness, print mottle reduction and ...
Aqualon™ carboxymethylcellulose
Aqualon™ and blanose™ CMC are anionic, water-soluble polymers. CMC is made by reacting alkali cellulose with sodium monochloroacetate under rigidly controlled conditions. The resultant polymer is purified and dried. Purified cmc for personal care and cosmetic applications is typically sold at 99.5 percent minimum purity. Physical and solution properties of cmc can be varied through manipulation of degree of substitution (D...
Galactasol™ cationic guar
Galactasol™ cationic guar is used in paper for its effectiveness as a formation aid in newsprint and recycled board and for its drainage and fine retention properties.
THF - Tetrahydrofuran
Tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvent is an inert, versatile solvent offering high solvency power for numerous organic substances. It is used as a starting reagent in many syntheses. adhesives applicationSolvent for PVC, polyurethane, polycarbonate, acetate, thermoplastics for adhesives/cements. adhesives features/benefits:Rapid uniformbit into substrates, hogh volatile, solvency, minimize gelling and contributes to bonding strength coatings & inks a...
