Ashland Performance Materials

Ashland, in cooperation with the Architectural Division of the American Composite Manufacturers Association (ACMA), is sponsoring the inaugural Composites Design Challenge. The competition is aimed at generating greater awareness of the uses and benefits of composites among the next generation of architects and engineers.  The leading entrants of the Composites Design Challenge will exhibit their designs at the AIA National Convention in Philadelphia in May 2016. Winning entrant teams will be announced at the AIA convention.

More than 20 teams from universities across North America have accepted the invitation to participate in this material research and design challenge. Student teams are asked to use composite material construction to develop a novel architectural component or assembly. The teams must consider the development of an architectural/ building component or assembly that operates in a systemic way and can interpret uses that range from structural to aesthetic.

Ashland is providing the cash awards for the winning entrants and has donated Hetron™ FR 650 T-20 resin to the competition for the students to use in their designs. This fire retardant resin has been used to meet NFPA 285 and ASTM E84 Class I flame and smoke requirements specified for many architectural applications.  In addition, Ashland is donating the floor space at the AIA convention within the “Composites Pavilion” where the selected teams will display their designs.

With a focus on industry response to new operational and environmental challenges for power plants, and a streamlined format, the MEGA Symposium returns in 2016 through the combined efforts of four key industry players – the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA).

The 2016 MEGA will provide a forum for sharing approaches, successes, and challenges complying with these regulations in light of the changing mission (“flexible operations”) of fossil-fueled electric generating units, as well as technology options for compliance with the Clean Power Plan.
