Corrosion Resistant FRP
Derakane™ and Hetron™ resins set the standard in winning the battle against corrosion.
Ashland’s Derakane and Hetron resins have defined a legacy of excellence in corrosion-resistant fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) applications from chemical processing, water treatment and pollution control, to mineral processing.
Corrosion Resistance
Appropriate for a wide range of acids, bases, chlorides, solvents and oxidizers. Comparable to, and often exceeding, other materials of construction, including high-priced nickel alloys.
Heat Resistance
Select grades can be used in ducting and chimney liners at continuous service temperatures up to 175° C (350° F) with occasional upsets up to 315° C (600° F). Appropriate for applications requiring Class1 (ASTM E-84) fire performance.
Longer Life
Outperforms most commonly used metals in corrosive environments and, in some applications, up to the life of the plant.
Low Maintenance
Superior corrosion resistance translates into significantly reduced maintenance costs. FRP does not require cathodic protection nor the continuous application of maintenance coatings. It can easily be inspected and maintained.
Broad Formulation Range
Adaptable to a broad range of formulations for optimum performance in a wide variety of fabrication processes, including contact molding, filament winding, pultrusion, infusion and RTM. Low-emission versions are also offered.
High Performance
Demonstrates high strength, low weight and excellent thermal insulating properties, allowing for easy installation and exceptional overall performance.

Chemical Processing
FRP made with Ashland Derakane and Hetron epoxy vinyl ester resins delivers substantially better corrosion resistance than alternative materials of construction (e.g. stainless steel) in aggressive chemical environments. Design engineers commonly specify these resins in aqueous acid and alkali environments as well as aqueous salts.
Water / Wastewater
FRP made with Ashland Derakane and Hetron epoxy vinyl ester resins is heavily used in water and wastewater service. It is particularly well-suited to seawater piping in cooling water systems and desalination plants. It is also widely used in odor-control system scrubbers, weirs, baffles and storage tanks. CIPP (Cured in Place Pipe) is commonly fabricated with Ashland Derakane and Hetron resins for use in sewer pipe relining. Design engineers rely heavily on these resins for the fabrication of sodium hypochlorite (bleach) storage tanks and piping systems.
Pulp and Paper
FRP made with Ashland Derakane and Hetron epoxy vinyl ester resins is ideal for use in pulp bleaching processes. It stands up very well to chlorine environments. Bleaching tanks and hoods are commonly made with these resins.
Mineral Processing
FRP piping made from Derakane and Hetron epoxy vinyl ester resin is well suited for mineral processing plants due to its excellent resistance to acid, caustic and ability to be fabricated for abrasion resistance. Acid plant ducting, piping and scrubbers frequently rely on these resins for their compatibility with wet acid gases and recovered acids from the scrubbing process. FRP tanks fabricated with Derakane and Hetron resins and abrasion-resistant additives provide very good abrasion resistance to ore slurries and high durability to acid chloride environments. They are also ideally suited for use in solvent extraction processes. Polymer concrete electrowinning cells rely upon these resins for their excellent resistance to dilute sulfuric acid and copper sulfate solutions. Derakane and Hetron resins are also employed in the production of FRP piping for process water tanks and piping.
Air Pollution Control
FRP scrubbers, piping and ducting made from Derakane and Hetron epoxy vinyl ester resins are commonly found in equipment used to scrub air pollutants from coal-fired power plants. FRP scrubbers, tanks and slurry piping made with these resins provide superior abrasion and corrosion resistance. Ducting, stack liners and demister blades made with Derakane and Hetron resins provide superior corrosion resistance to hot, wet acidic gases. Process water tanks and piping often use these resins due to their compatibility with hot process water. Cooling towers frequently specify these resins for use in pultruded structural profiles and fan shrouds due to their high durability and low maintenance requirements.
