MSDS FAQs

The information below provides answers to questions related to Ashland Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and compliance with REACH. Please note that this information also applies to MSDS from the former Hercules Inc. organization.

Q. Are the Ashland MSDS REACH compliant?
A.

Yes. Ashland is in compliance with the requirements of the European REACH, substance and preparation directives. Following the REACH directive, Ashland made changes to the main template of our MSDS, such as switching the order of hazard identification (Chapter 3 to Chapter 2) and composition/information on ingredients (Chapter 2 to Chapter 3) and adding an e-mail address to contact information

Q. Are Pre-Registration numbers disclosed on the MSDS?
A. No. Pre-Registration numbers will not be disclosed by Ashland and therefore will not be disclosed on the MSDS. Providing pre-registration numbers is not required by REACH and is generally not done by Industry. However, Ashland has created a REACH Product Search (http://reachquicksearch.ashland.com/) to provide pre-registration statements on all of our products.

Q. Will registration numbers be disclosed on the MSDS?
A. Yes. For all hazardous ingredients, listed in Chapter 3 of the MSDS, the registration number will be disclosed as well as CAS number and the mass percentage range of the ingredients in the product.

Q. Are the results of the Chemical Safety Assessment as outlined in the Chemical Safety Report included in the MSDS (in other words, is the MSDS already an eSDS)?
A. No. The Chemical Safety Assessments (CSA) and Chemical Safety Reports (CSR) will not be available until after SIEFs have completed the testing and evaluation of substances required for substance registration.. The first CSAs and CSRs are expected to be ready after Spring 2010. Only then an extended MSDS (eSDS) can be drafted and released for products containing the evaluated substances (12 months implementation period).

Q. Are Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) disclosed on the MSDS?
A. Yes. It is Ashland’s aspirational goal to not sell any products containing SVHC. In the case that SVHCs are in a preparation of more than 0.1 % m/m, the SVHC will be disclosed on the MSDS (chapter 3). Hazard information and related details will be disclosed through out the MSDS chapters.

Q. Are the Ashland MSDS compliant with the Global Harmonized System (GHS)?
A. This is a work in progress as GHS is not yet (fully) implemented in the EU. Ashland will follow the mandatory timeline for implementation of GHS and adjust documentation accordingly.

Q. Is your product Registered for my end use?
A. This is a work in progress. End uses are planned to be gathered from our customers through the REACH Product Search (http://reachquicksearch.ashland.com) starting 1 June 2009, so that Ashland can obtain the appropriate registration – or ensure our suppliers register appropriately. End uses will not be identified on the MSDS until a registration has been received for a substance. However, the end uses intended to be registered will be displayed through the REACH Product Search.
