The trend toward the use of high-viscosity blended residual fuels, coupled with the general decline in their quality, has created problems for owners and ship operators. These problems may cause costly repairs and disputes between owners, ship operators, bunker suppliers and engine manufacturers. Knowing the chemical and physical characteristics of each fuel bunkered prior to its use can minimize many of these problems.
