Spectrum™ XD3899 microbiocide
Spectrum XD3899 is a unique, patented microbiocide that effectively controls microorganisms in alkaline papermaking systems without the adverse side effects associated with strong oxidizing biocides. The microbiocide drastically reduces microbiological activity throughout the entire papermaking process, providing a truly clean machine. From the machine stock system to the headbox and throughout the white water system, the microbiocide controls all types of microorganisms, including filamentous bacteria, unicellular bacteria, anaerobic bacteria, yeast and mold.
The Spectrum XD3899 microbiocide, which can be described as a mild oxidizer, has proven to be more effective than strong oxidizing biocides and organic biocides. Additionally, the technology has been shown to provide benefits not typical of traditional programs, including improved drainage, enhanced felt performance and improved wet end chemistry efficiency. Notably, more than 700 paper machines around the world use Spectrum XD3899, making it the most widely used biocide in the paper industry.

Customer Analytical Services
Ashland Water Technologies’ Customer Analytical Services team is dedicated to helping customers address the multitude of contaminants that can negatively impact the efficiency and reliability of their water-based systems. The team is made up of an experienced staff of analytical chemists, microbiologists and technicians and is supported by sophisticated testing equipment that provides rapid analysis and identification of contaminants beyond what may be accomplished with field-based methods. Key services provided by the team include fluid analysis, deposit analysis, microbiological analysis and metallurgical analysis.
Papermaking Services
Continuous pilot papermaking systems are the cornerstones of Ashland Water Technologies’ Papermaking Services group. The primary purpose of our papermaking operations is to provide papermakers with insights and solutions to problems and opportunities related to the effects of additives and system changes on wet-laid products and processes. Our facilities are equipped to conduct trials that predict commercial system performance.

Automated Dosing and Control
The Spectrum XD3899 microbiocide is produced onsite using proprietary dosing equipment (see Figure 1) that can be accessed and controlled remotely. The dosing system blends an ammonium bromide solution with sodium hypochlorite and mill fresh water under required reaction conditions to ensure 100% conversion of the biocide components. By strictly controlling the reaction, the system ensures that only the intended biocide is produced.

Figure 1 – Spectrum XD3899 dosing system.
The Spectrum XD3899 microbiocide is generated only when needed and is fed intermittently, allowing for reduced biocide usage. The dosing system also automatically adjusts biocide production to correct for any variances in biocide quality.
