Soyad™ adhesives
Interior wood products such as decorative plywood, particleboard, medium-density fiberboard, and engineered wood flooring use large amounts of adhesives, most of which contain urea-formaldehyde (UF). Over time, UF releases free formaldehyde into the air, going from its solid form in the adhesive to a gaseous form that is ingestible by humans. Given that formaldehyde was recently classified as a known carcinogen by the World Health Organization, new regulations have been enacted worldwide to reduce formaldehyde emissions from interior wood products.
Because there are few alternatives to UF-based adhesives, and because most substitutes cost significantly more, it is nice to know that Ashland offers cost-competitive, formaldehyde-free adhesives today. These patented, water-based products, which are marketed as Soyad adhesives, are formulated with soy flour and a proprietary cross-linking resin. When blended together, the resin reacts with the protein in the soy flour to form a durable and water-resistant thermoset adhesive. While Soyad adhesives have only recently been introduced, they have quickly become the adhesive of choice for industry-leading manufacturers who want to stay ahead of formaldehyde regulations and help improve the quality of indoor air for their workers and customers.

Comparison of Soyad and Other Low Emitting Adhesives
The table below compares the performance characteristics of Soyad adhesives with popular low-emitting adhesive alternatives, including phenol-formaldehyde (PF), melamine-formaldehyde (MF), polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI), and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc).

As shown in the table, the performance characteristics of Soyad adhesives are in most cases equal to or better than those of other low-emitting adhesives.
