Soyad™ adhesives

Interior wood products such as hardwood plywood, particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and engineered wood flooring are manufactured with various types of adhesives, the most common of which is made from urea-formaldehyde (UF). Over time, UF releases free formaldehyde into the air, going from its solid form in the adhesive to a gaseous form that is inhalable by humans. As formaldehyde was recently designated as a known carcinogen by a number of government and regulatory agencies around the world, regulations have been enacted globally to reduce formaldehyde emissions from interior wood products.

Because there are few alternatives to UF-based adhesives, and because most substitutes cost significantly more, it is nice to know that Ashland offers cost-competitive, formaldehyde-free adhesives today. These patented, water-based products, which are marketed as Soyad adhesives, are formulated with soy flour and a proprietary cross-linking resin. When blended together, the resin reacts with the protein in the soy flour to form a durable and water-resistant thermoset adhesive.

Introduced seven years ago, Soyad adhesives are today the adhesive system of choice for industry-leading manufacturers who want to stay ahead of formaldehyde regulations and help improve indoor air quality.

Research and Development

Ashland conducts primary research for Soyad adhesives at two facilities located in the United States: the Ashland Research Center in Wilmington, Delaware, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin. The Ashland Research Center is the primary site for Soyad research and development efforts. Efforts here are directed toward the discovery of new products and processes, the improvement and refinement of existing products and processes, the development of new applications for existing products, and manufacturing cost improvement initiatives. The Forest Products Laboratory, which Ashland maintains a strong partnership with, houses world-class pilot testing equipment for producing plywood, particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and oriented strand board (OSB).

Since 2006, Ashland has been granted seven patents for wood products adhesives and has another 18 patents pending, demonstrating the company’s commitment to developing innovative solutions for interior wood products.

Customer Applications Laboratories

Ashland’s Customer Applications are located regionally — in Wilmington, Delaware; Krefeld, Germany; Shanghai, China; and Paulinia, Brazil — and are staffed by some of the brightest and most knowledgeable problem-solvers in the industry. At their disposal is a vast selection of analytical and process testing equipment. These resources enable our scientists to analyze and identify customer problems rapidly, compare the impact of system additives in various industrial systems, and select the best chemistry or program to address a customer’s process needs.
