PerForm™ SP advanced retention and drainage aids
PerForm SP advanced retention and drainage aids comprise a family of patented products that provide superior retention, drainage and formation for a variety of paper grades, including neutral and alkaline-coated fine paper, uncoated fine paper, white top, recycled board, and tissue and towel. These novel products, which are formulated with an anionic, organic polymer with a three-dimensional structure, combine the drainage benefits of traditional microparticles, such as silica and bentonite, with the fines and filler retention capabilities of micropolymer technologies.
The high charge and small size of the organic polymer are what make the PerForm products unique and more effective than other commercially available technologies. In addition to improving retention and drainage, the products provide a controllable, stable response that frequently allows papermakers to reduce their operating costs.

Mode of Action
PerForm SP advanced retention and drainage aids are formulated with an organic polymer that interacts with cationic sites on fibers, fines and fillers to form microflocs. These micoflocs provide retention but enable higher levels of drainage compared to traditional flocculants, which create larger, more difficult to dry flocs. Cationic sites are commonly provided by additives such as alum, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), cationic flocculants, cationic starch and/or polyamide wet strength resins. The sites that have the strongest influence on PerForm SP products are created by sources of aluminum, such as alum and PAC. Low levels of these additives used in conjunction with a PerForm SP product provide high levels of retention and drainage. In some programs, cationic flocculants are used in addition to or in place of alum or PAC to provide additional cationic sites to boost performance.
