imPress™ CL surface sizing agents
With the emergence of a new generation of inkjet printers that use pigment-based inks, businesses and consumers finally have a viable alternative to laser printing. While these new printers offer faster printing speeds and improved image definition, the pigment-based inks used in these systems tend to lack in color density and sharp lines. A novel surface treatment from Ashland enables papermakers to produce a sheet that enhances the print quality of pigment-based inks and helps papermakers keep pace with printing system advancements without making a capital investment.
Ashland’s imPress CL surface sizing agents radically improve the print performance of paper used in inkjet printers, especially inkjet printers utilizing pigment-based inks. These patented, liquid products, which are formulated with a proprietary synthetic surface size and a unique mordant technology, are easily applied at the mill using a simple metering system. Paper treated with an imPress CL surface sizing agent enables the end user to produce prints with exceptional image quality and definition using a variety of printing devices. The final printed image not only exhibits bolder blacks and more vivid colors but is also smear resistant.

Mode of Action
Cellulose reactive sizes develop relatively high sizing levels compared to nonreactive sizes. The most common cellulose reactive sizes, alkyl ketene dimer (AKD) and alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA), have sites that form covalent bonds with hydroxyl groups on cellulose. It is generally accepted that the same covalent reaction occurs with the hydroxyl groups on starch molecules. Similarly, imPress ST surface size agents react with hydroxyl groups. These groups are present on the size press starch and the base sheet fiber. This reaction delivers a high level of sizing that is unmatched by traditional surface sizes.
