Hercules alkaline size emulsification systems
Ashland has been in the business of helping papermakers size their paper and board for more than 80 years. Our understanding of the principles of sizing and the factors that affect sizing help us implement a complete sizing program every time. One of the key factors that dramatically impacts sizing is the use of a high-quality size emulsion with minimal variability in emulsion particle size.
To ensure consistent production of a high-quality size emulsion, Ashland developed a family of size emulsification systems that provide on-target sizing performance every time. Marketed as Hercules alkaline
size emulsification (HASE) systems, these state-of-the-art devices produce a liquid reactive size emulsion with minimal variability in emulsion particle size distribution.
HASE systems allow the produced emulsion to be fed directly to the paper machine using either mill-supplied starch or Prequel™ precooked liquid starch. The emulsion is a dispersion of microscopic droplets of liquid-reactive size in the starch. When this emulsion is delivered to the paper machine, these microscopic droplets spread out on the paper surface and provide the paper with water-resistance properties.

Ashland’s HASE 300B system is an exclusive design with a flexible, programmable logic controller and a Burks* regenerative-type stainless steel turbine pump.
