Advantage™ biodefoamers
Advantage biodefoamers comprise a family of patented products that effectively control foam in brown stock washers. The products are produced from natural agri-based oils (i.e., oil produced from agricultural produce) that are readily available and typically more cost effective than petroleum-based oils and synthetic silicone fluids. The products are biodegradable, FDA approved and available as an emulsion or a concentrate.
In addition to mitigating the impact of future raw material cost increases, Advantage biodefoamers have proven to be an effective replacement for silicone-based emulsion/concentrate products and conventional petroleum-based products. Commercial trials and ongoing applications demonstrate that the products provide improved defoaming, drainage and washer efficiency at a cost equal to or better than most mills’ existing defoamer programs.

Customer Analytical Services
Ashland Water Technologies’ Customer Analytical Services team is dedicated to helping customers address the multitude of contaminants that can negatively impact the efficiency and reliability of their water-based systems. The team is made up of an experienced staff of analytical chemists, microbiologists and technicians and is supported by sophisticated testing equipment that provides rapid analysis and identification of contaminants beyond what may be accomplished with field-based methods. Key services provided by the team include fluid analysis, deposit analysis, microbiological analysis and metallurgical analysis.
Papermaking Services
Continuous pilot papermaking systems are the cornerstones of Ashland Water Technologies’ Papermaking Services group. The primary purpose of our papermaking operations is to provide papermakers with insights and solutions to problems and opportunities related to the effects of additives and system changes on wet-laid products and processes. Our facilities are equipped to conduct trials that predict commercial system performance.

Mode of Action
Similar to conventional brown stock defoamers, Advantage biodefoamers work by preferential surfactant displacement and physical bubble disruption. However, the agri-based oils used in the manufacture of the biodefoamers reduce the affinity of the liquor for pulp fibers, which in turn reduces liquor surface tension. The reduced surface tension allows for improved washer drainage.
