Helping grow the next generation

Annual program for science educators includes touring our plant

After getting their protective equipment, the teachers prepared to tour our plant.

More than 50 educators from across Ohio toured our plant in Columbus, Ohio, as part of the 19th annual Teachers, Industry and Environment Conference. Established by the Ohio Chemistry Technology Council’s foundation, the conference gives elementary and middle school teachers the opportunity to gain first-hand experience and learn new approaches to teaching the principles of chemistry, physics and life sciences to their students. We are among the member companies sponsoring teachers' attendance. Our Columbus plant produces products for the pharmaceutical and personal care industries, among other businesses.

“For the last several years, this has been one of the most exciting days of the year for the plant," said Philip Popovec, the site's general manager. "We get to show off our chemistry and manufacturing capabilities and answer questions from those teaching the next generation of scientists, engineers and plant operators."

Over the course of the conference, The Carnegie Science Center, Science Education for Science Advancement, universities, and Ohio’s environmental agency demonstrated exciting experiments that teachers can easily duplicate in their own classrooms. These sessions are designed to demonstrate of the effects of sediment pollution in streams and ways to prevent soil erosion. There were plenty of hands-on activities using toys and other household items to illustrate each of the principles of chemistry.

Our plant has sponsored the event for more than 10 years. During that time, 400 teachers, 20 of whom were sponsored by the company, have toured the location.
