"Ashland is a good place to work - the conditions of employment are very good! There are a lot of opportunities to grow in this business, too."

Wendy
Customer service supervisor
Valvoline International, Benelux*

Day in the Life

I work with a wide variety of people every day - from colleagues to customers. So, I think one of the most important traits a person could have to be successful in this job is to like people; and I do.

As a customer service supervisor, I'm responsible for providing customers with information and solutions. What's most challenging about the position is keeping customers satisfied. I let them know they are important to us and that their concerns and needs are taken very seriously. Our goal is to provide the very best products and services.

Ashland uses the acronym "PACES" to describe how we will achieve our business goals throughout the company. It stands for proactive, accountable, collaboration, externally focused, and acting with speed - and PACES applies to every employee.

As a customer service supervisor, I act proactively by staying on top of things I need to know to be able to help our customers. I am accountable for giving customers what they need and must often collaborate with our logistic provider to do so. Of course, it's very important for a customer service supervisor to be externally focused. After all, we rely on customers for the success of our business. Because customers expect a quick answer when they call, I act with speed to make sure they get it.

The thing I like most about my job is the variety. I also like the contact with customers and with my colleagues. It's important to me to be part of a nice team. In fact, my fondest memory of working at Ashland was the move to Barendrecht last year. Nowadays, we are all together, with several Ashland divisions in one office. It gives us more opportunities to work closer together.

I work five days a week. Every day, I start at 8:30 a.m., and I leave the office at approximately 6 p.m. In addition to customers, I daily interact with my colleagues in logistics - to check the availability or transportation status of goods. Now and then, I may also get in touch with someone in bookkeeping, to check on customer-payment information. Other than going to and from work, this job doesn't require travel.

What I would want someone interested in this position to know is that it is essential to be all-around accurate, to be able to direct and motivate others, to establish good relationships with customers and to be willing to take the initiative. For me, it is a very interesting job - it differs every day!
