"People my age are usually flipping burgers, but I'm always learning something new. The customers are nice, and we have a good crew, too!"

Technician
Valvoline Instant Oil Change
Columbus, Ohio

Day in the Life

Day to day, I may do anything from servicing vehicles and preparing invoices to working with the computer system and greeting customers. But basically, changing oil is what I do. That includes lubricating parts; draining and replacing the oil; changing the oil filter; and checking out the rest of the car.

I can provide other services, too, things the customer may not even think to ask about. VIOC is not just a place where you go in, have your oil changed, and we send you on your way. We go over our customers' vehicles with a fine-tooth comb and let them know what other types of services their vehicle may need - even if it's not something we service at VIOC. For instance, if we find a leak in the brake line, we let the customer know, because it could keep them from having an accident. Not every oil change center would mention it, because they don't fix brake lines. We want our customers to come back safely!

Each VIOC crew works together as a team. We "call out" to each other, to make sure every vehicle is serviced according to VIOC's Super-ProŽ procedures. We also use callouts to verify each task is performed safely and correctly and that all caps, covers, parts and dipsticks are properly reinstalled.

We work on all types of vehicles, from the 1960s and 1970s to the newest ones. You don't remember every car that comes in, but you learn something from every type of vehicle. It broadens your horizons.

For me, it's not really work. I've loved cars since I was little. The only thing like work is the schedule, and, of course, I have to be here at a certain time. Most days, I work from 7:45 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m., and I normally work about 40 hours a week. Different stores have different hours, though, so you may have to work a different shift.

The first thing I do in the mornings is make sure everything is clean, that supplies are all in stock and that the oil filters are where they need to be. Everything has to be ready before our customers begin arriving. They're here for an oil change, not to wait for us to get ready. Once the "open" sign comes on, it's pretty much non-stop work until the end of the day.

Sometimes people will come in and remember your name or will even say, "You guys do the best job around." Having someone tell you that makes you want to work even harder.

If you're looking for a job where you can learn a lot and get promoted, you will be able to do that here. People push you to excel because they're happy to see you move up and learn new things.

As a VIOC technician I get to hang out with neat people, work on cars, and the customers are nice - it's a fun thing to do!

® The VIOC SuperPro® technical certification program maps out daily procedures and provides a standard process for ensuring consistent execution of operations among all service centers.
