"My position is very fulfilling. Every day brings new challenges and problems to solve, and it feels good to help a customer out of a jam or see the fruits of your labor pay off one way or another."

Peggy
Plant manager
Ashland Distribution
Denver, Colo.

Day in the Life

You might say my career at Ashland began by coincidence. Upon graduation from college, my sister was exploring opportunities with the company; not me. Due to inexperience, she wasn't eligible for the job in which she was interested. So she asked about other positions and learned there was an opening for a tax clerk. After she told me about the opportunities at Ashland, I applied for that position, and two weeks later I was hired. That was 16 years ago, and my sister was certainly right about the opportunities. Today I'm a plant manager for Ashland Distribution.

What I like best about my job is that I work with a great team, and every day presents new opportunities to learn. On a typical day I oversee operations for our distribution business. Our primary goal is simple - to provide customers with accurate and on-time delivery in a cost-effective manner.

The most challenging part of my job is accommodating customer emergencies. For instance, a customer may discover they're low on product and need same-day delivery. Sometimes we don't learn this until the truck is on the road. That doesn't matter. Our drivers are always willing to work out a plan to meet customers' needs.

My usual workday begins at 6 a.m. and ends about 12 hours later. It's important to me that I'm available for my team when needed. On a daily basis, I interact with fellow Ashland employees throughout our company.

This job does require travel. In fact, this year I had an opportunity to spend three weeks at our Houston facility, filling in for the plant manager while she was on maternity leave. That's what I mean about being part of a team. We're there for each other.

A potential candidate for this job needs to know that a plant manager is critical to the well-being of the business. I'm responsible for the safety of employees, customers, our community and the environment. Anyone interested in this position should have excellent organizational skills and be able to wisely manage time. He or she should also be analytical, have good people skills and be able to quickly solve problems.

The company has offered me many opportunities to grow both personally and professionally, and my family has been able to take advantage of the excellent benefits offered by Ashland as well.

That's not the only way Ashland shows its appreciation. They publicly recognize your successes. During the last three years alone, my seller and I have received awards for increasing our sales, contributing to the overall success of Ashland Distribution, helping to reduce inventory, and moving out of a leased facility.

Ashland is a great place to work. I intend to stay here until I retire.
