"Everyone pulls together and supports each other - that's my favorite thing about VIOC. On the day I earned my assistant manager certification, everybody was so proud and congratulated me. That meant a lot to me."

Day in the Life

The first thing that struck me when I applied for a job at VIOC was the environment. Not only was the place spotless, but everybody was so friendly. In all the years I've worked here, that's not changed.

As a VIOC assistant manager, I take over the manager's responsibilities when he or she is not on-site. That means opening ontime, keeping customers satisfied and making sure all technicians, senior technicians and customer service representatives work safely and stick to Super-ProŽ policies and procedures. I call Super-Pro our "bible," by the way. It's VIOC's method of doing business; what sets us apart from other companies; and why we're so good at what we do. Super-Pro ensures consistent quality in our operations and services and helps control costs. There's no "give and take" when it comes to Super-Pro. As a result, training is one of the most challenging parts of my job. It doesn't matter if you're already a first-class mechanic when you come to work here, you must operate under our Super-Pro policies and procedures. VIOC makes it easy, though. They train every employee, to make sure each has the skills needed to do the job.

Our store opens at 8 a.m. It's up to me to open the service center, turn on the equipment, check our inventory, and make sure everything is in place for the day's operations. I also track sales, keep up the paperwork and make out work schedules. I like to arrive earlier than the rest of the crew, but that's not required. It helps me mentally prepare for the day and make sure the store is "shipshape."

An assistant manager works with many different people on a daily basis, including employees, customers, vendors, suppliers - and even our neighbors. We have a good reputation in the neighborhood and work hard to keep it that way. One thing I like about the job is that there's something new and different about each day. I meet many different people, and the work is fun and fast-paced, which makes the day go by quickly. On a typical day, we may do from 25-30 oil changes, but we've done as many as 50. The major and best part of my job is working with customers. I love helping to educate them about their vehicles. Customer satisfaction is our primary goal. People skills are an important trait for anyone who works at VIOC.

At the end of the day, I do a final check to make sure everything is clean, in place and ready for the next workday. All in all, there's not much travel involved in my job. Once in awhile I may have to attend a meeting off-site somewhere, but not often. This is a fair company, and it's going to be around a long time, too. You control your own destiny here, and everybody gets the same chance to succeed. VIOC even has a college reimbursement program, so I can go to college and they'll pay for it.

Anyone interested in my position should have a strong sense of responsibility and be able to motivate people. Leadership skills, customer service, fairness and honesty are all important
