Legionella Risk Management

Legionella bacteria has been recognized as the cause of Legionellosis, a potentially fatal pneumonia. It is caused by the inhalation of contaminated, airborne water droplets from water systems. Legionella bacteria are widespread in the natural environment in rivers, lakes and soil, and can be present in industrial water systems. Any water system that produces aerosols or mists can be a source of infection, if the virulent strains of Legionella are present. Systems that provide the greatest amplification, multiplication and dissemination of aerosols include cooling towers, fountains, showers and other water misting or containing systems.

To minimize Legionella, a combination of mechanical, operational and chemical treatments are used, to keep all microbiological growth to as low a level as possible. Our comprehensive system approach is the most effective way to minimize the potential for Legionella growth.

Properly applied, our microbiocidal programs reduce overall microbiological growth in cooling systems, one of the key recommendations for minimizing Legionella presence.
