Our resins support breakthrough wind turbine

 

Ashland’s Aropol™  resins are holding up the turbine on VolturnUS 1:8, the first grid-connected, offshore wind turbine to be deployed off the coasts of North America.

The prototype is a product of the University of Maine’s DeepCwind Consortium to find ways to reduce the cost of offshore wind energy. The 65-foot composite tower weighs 20 percent less than steel and is anchored to a polymer concrete floating base.

Being off the coast of Maine, the turbine will collect frequent and predictable ocean breezes during times of high demand for electricity. So, besides being lightweight and less costly to build, the tower will also be able to resist the corrosive marine environment.
